The Body Knows What the Mind Cannot
Somatic wisdom is the older, slower knowing that lives beneath thought.
For years, I tried to think my way out of feeling stuck. I read the books, repeated the affirmations, made the vision boards. My mind knew everything. And yet nothing moved — because the part of me that was scared was never in my mind. It was living in my shoulders.
Here is something I now tell every client: your beliefs do not live in your thoughts. They live in your body.
Where "not enough" actually lives
Scarcity is not an idea. It is a clenched jaw at 7 a.m. It is shoulders that sit two inches higher than they need to. It is the shallow breath you take before opening a message you are afraid to read. Your body memorised these positions long before you had words for them — and it holds them faithfully, every day, like a guard who never got the message that the war ended.
This is why you can say "I am abundant" a hundred times and still feel broke. The words go to the mind. The belief lives somewhere else entirely.
The ten-minute practice
Tonight, try this. No candles required — just you, lying down or sitting comfortably.
Close your eyes and slowly scan from your head to your feet. Do not fix anything. Just visit. Forehead, jaw, throat, shoulders, chest, belly, hands. At each stop, ask one quiet question: "What are you holding for me?"
Somewhere, you will find it — a tightness, a bracing, a place that feels like it has been on duty for years. When you find it, do not push it away. Name it. "There you are. The not-enough lives here."
Then breathe into that exact place — inhale for four counts, exhale for six — and say, silently: "You can soften now. I am safe enough to soften."
That is the whole practice. You are not fixing your body. You are finally listening to it.
What happens when the body is heard
The first time I found where my fear lived — for me, it was the chest, a bracing I had carried so long I thought it was normal — I cried. Not from sadness. From recognition. Some part of me had been waiting years to be noticed.
And here is the quiet miracle: what gets noticed, softens. What softens, releases. And a body that is no longer braced for scarcity becomes a body that can actually receive.
Your mind writes the new story. But it is your body that has to believe it. Start there.
